Logan boys fall to Fort Sumner in semifinal

The Logan boys basketball team fell 63-52 in the semifinal Thursday of the Class 1A-6 district tournament at Fort Sumner.

The Longhorns (15-13) fell behind 19-9 in the first quarter and trailed the Foxes 32-19 at intermission.

“(We) dug ourselves a hole in the first quarter and worked hard to catch back up,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “Guys fought hard but came up short.”

Wyatt Wright led the Longhorns with 21 points, and Michael Sena added 12.

Fort Sumner, ranked sixth in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com last week, improved to 15-11 overall.

Melrose, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A with a 25-1 record, blasted Fort Sumner 64-36 in the district tournament title game Saturday.

Logan 62, Grady/San Jon 51

A 27-point outburst by the Longhorns in the third quarter proved crucial during a 62-51 victory Feb. 25 over hosting Grady/San Jon during the second round of the district tournament.

Logan led only 24-18 at intermission. It big rally in the third swelled the Longhorns’ advantage to 51-36, and they fended off a late charge by the Bronchos (12-11).

Garrett Bollinger scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead Logan, and Dante Sanchez added 11.

Avenging an overtime loss to Grady/San Jon the previous week, Griffiths said it was “a big win for us on a back-to-back night.” He noted his team “didn’t have our best offensive night, but we found a way to win.”

Isaiah Mitchell led the Bronchos with 20 points, while Dustin Bryant added 13. Grady/San Jon was without one of its leading scorers, senior Chisum Rush, because of a fractured thumb.

“For not having Chisum, who is our biggest rebounder, I was proud of the effort our guys played with,” Bronchos coach Jonathan Langan said. “They could’ve let it get ugly in the third, but they battled every step of the way.”

Logan 86, Clovis Christian 47

The Longhorns raced to an early double-digit lead and cruised to an 86-47 victory Feb. 24 over Clovis Christian in the first round of the district tournament.

Logan held a 21-5 lead after the first quarter and held a 46-24 at intermission.

Griffiths said his team “played with a sense of urgency” and “defended fairly well against a solid Clovis Christian team.”

Sanchez scored 26 points to lead the Longhorns, while Bollinger added 21 and Matthew Norman 19.

Clovis Christian fell to 9-17.
