Housing authority receives $11,000 from HUD

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded more than $2.1 million from CARES Act funds to housing authorities in New Mexico, including more than $11,000 to the Tucumcari Housing Authority.

The grant is funded by the $850 million provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act for administrative and other expenses incurred by public housing authorities to implement key programs such as the Housing Choice Voucher program and Tenant Based Rental Assistance, according to a joint news release from U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Reps. Ben Ray Lujan, Deb Haaland and Xochitl Torres Small.

The state previously received $1.62 million in similar funding for housing authorities across the state, in addition to over $16.7 million for emergency housing funds to keep more people in homes during the dual economic disruption and public health crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 15 housing authorities in New Mexico received the HUD grants. The Tucumcari Housing Authority’s total was $11,096. Other entities that received money were Albuquerque, Clovis, Gallup, Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, Truth or Consequences, Rio Arriba County, Bernalillo County, San Miguel County and San Juan County. The Mesilla Valley, Eastern Regional, Western Regional, El Camino Real and Northern Regional housing authorities also received grants.
