1971: San Jon’s Don McCoy and Harold Diaz won the senior division of their school’s spelling bee and will compete in the Quay County Spelling Bee next week. At Tucumcari Junior High School, Dale Ann Pannell won first place in its spelling bee. Libby Haller finished runner-up, and Jenny Williams was third.

• The Tucumcari Rattlers baseball team earned its first victory of the young season with an 11-1 demolition of West Las Vegas. Mickey Gares led the Rattlers by going 2-for-3 at the plate, and teammates Dutchy Byrum and Jesse Davis each went 2-for-4. Donnie Greer, Brian Priddy and Pete Jimenez each pitched two innings for Tucumcari.

• The Canal Drive-In was screening “Poor White Trash” and “Shame.” “Poor White Trash’s” director stated no children would be allowed to see the film, and special police will supervise admissions due to its “abnormal subject matter.” The Odeon Theatre was showing the Elvis Presley movie “The Trouble with Girls” and the horror flick “House of Dark Shadows.”
