Logan falls behind Tatum

Logan fell behind early and never could quite catch up during a 50-34 road loss Saturday to defending state runner-up Tatum in Logan’s season finale of eight-man football action.

Miscues by the Longhorns (1-3) put them in a hole during the first quarter.

“We had a penalty when we were driving, and then we gave up an interception for a touchdown that put them up 20-0,” Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said.

Tatum (3-1) led 38-14 at halftime, but Logan rallied in the third quarter.

“We had (the deficit) down to eight in the third quarter, but then they scored to put themselves up by two touchdowns again,” Roberts said. “Once we got it down to eight in the third, I thought, ‘We just got one hump to get over,’ and there was no telling how it would have turned out had we gotten it.”

“It was a great game; the boys played hard. It was probably their best game of the season,” he added.

Both teams went scoreless during the fourth quarter.

Logan quarterback Wyatt Wright ran for a 2-yard touchdown and threw TD passes of 40 yards to Dante Sanchez and 20 yards to Kaden Riggs.

However, Wright also threw three interceptions. Logan also lost a fumble during the critical first quarter. Two of the turnovers led to touchdowns for Tatum.

Park Strong returned an interception 35 yards for a Logan touchdown.

Roberts lamented the loss of seven seniors from his team — Wyatt, Sanchez, Riggs, Jordan Evans, Eric Long, Tyler Harris and Nick Brown.

“They’re going to be missed,” he said. “They’re great guys. I’m proud of them.”

With basketball season looming, Logan elected not to play a fifth game in football this weekend.

No state tournament was scheduled this season for football during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fort Sumner prevailed 44-14 Saturday over defending state champ Melrose in what many considered as a de facto title game in eight-man football.
