COVID-19 case closes part of San Jon schools

San Jon Municipal Schools announced Tuesday it will close its middle school and high school and go back to online instruction with those students after a confirmed case of COVID-19 there.

The district stated in a Facebook post would go to remote learning until May 10, when in-person classes resume for those students.

It stated secondary students would go live on the Zoom videoconference according to their current class schedules.

A letter from San Jon superintendent Janet Gladu posted on the district's website stated a student or staff member had tested positive for the disease. Using guidance from the state, the district will investigate who was in close contact with the infected person. Those possibly exposed must quarantine at home for 10 days and are encouraged to be tested for the virus.

Elementary students at San Jon will remain in in-person instruction.

Logan Municipal Schools also sent out a text that basketball games scheduled for Tuesday night at San Jon were canceled because of a positive case there.

Gladu said the school closure effectively ends San Jon High School's basketball season, forcing the cancellation of the season finale Saturday against Grady.

The New Mexico Department of Health on Tuesday afternoon reported three more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Quay County. Two of them were in the San Jon ZIP code; the third was in Tucumcari.

Also, Tucumcari Public Schools posted a notice on its website that a staff member or student tested positive for COVID-19. The district is investigating who was in close contact with the individual. Those in close contact must be tested and quarantine for 10 days. The school remains open to in-person classes.
