1971: Three Soviet cosmonauts died died returning to Earth from their record spaceflight of nearly 24 days, according to United Press International. The Soviet Tass news agency reported Soyuz 11 cosmonauts Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsayev were found strapped in their seats “without any signs of life” when their spacecraft soft-landed in Soviet Central Asia early today. It was revealed two years later the capsule depressurized during preparations for re-entry, asphyxiating the crew.

• A 17-year-old boy was admitted to Trigg Memorial Hospital for observation for his injuries after his pickup truck crashed into a State Highway Department mower 22 miles north of Tucumcari on Highway 104.The northbound pickup truck hit the mower near a bridge, went airborne and crashed upside-down into a creek bed 14 feet below. The teen’s passenger and mower operator were unhurt.

• The Odeon Theatre, claiming the film was “probably the most terrifying film you will ever see,” was screening “The Abominable Dr. Phibes,” starring Vincent Price and Joseph Cotten.
