Logan girls suffer first loss

The Logan girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 53-29 non-district road loss Friday at Boise City, Oklahoma.

Logan coach Glynna Strand said her team saw three of its starters on the bench barely two minutes into the game due to foul trouble.

She said the Lady Longhorns were whistled for 12 fouls during that time to Boise City’s two.

Desta Rose, an eighth-grader, led Logan with eight points.

Boise City improved to 5-2 overall.

Logan 68, Des Moines 7

Logan bounced back from its first loss the previous night with a dominating 68-7 victory Saturday at Des Moines.

Rose again led the Lady Longhorns in scoring, this time with 18 points. Reece Goldston added 13 points.

Strand attributed Rose’s recent scoring surge to her “getting more comfortable and confident.”

Logan improved to 7-1 overall. Des Moines fell to 1-6.

Logan 45, Roy/Mosquero 41

Logan outlasted regional rival Roy/Mosquero 45-41 during a non-district matchup Thursday against the defending Class 1A champion.

Goldston led the Lady Longhorns with 24 points, while Kyra Conway added 10.

“We looked a little bit sluggish,” Strand said when asked to assess her team’s performance.

Roy/Mosquero fell to 5-2.

Texico 44, San Jon 21

The Coyotes finished 1-2 at the Citizens Bank Classic tournament after a 44-21 loss Saturday against host team Texico.

The Wolverines, leading only 16-12 at intermission, seized control by outscoring San Jon 17-4 in the third period.

San Jon coach Jaree Elliott said her team didn’t have a strong press defense like it did during a victory the previous day over Jal, but it “made up for it and pulled back in a zone and played well.”

“But we didn’t turn out offensive possessions into points,” she added.

Elliott also said Karlee and Chantzee Elliott fell into foul trouble and spent a lot of time on the bench during the critical third quarter.

Chantzee Elliott led San Jon with 10 points.

San Jon’s record stood at 2-3 during the holiday break. Texico improved to 2-4.

San Jon 43, Jal 35

The Lady Coyotes bounced back from the dispiriting loss to Farwell the previous day with a 43-35 victory Friday over Jal during the Citizens Bank Classic.

San Jon outscored Jal 17-6 in the fourth quarter to salt away the game. Chantzee Elliott scored eight of her team-high 16 points during the period. Karlee Elliott added 10 points and Sarah Archuleta nine.

“We stepped on the floor with our fire back tonight,” coach Elliott said. “… We did much better at running offenses, pushing the ball up the floor and play aggressive defense and press.”

Farwell 72, San Jon 6

San Jon found itself overwhelmed 72-6 against a traditionally strong Farwell team in the opening round Thursday of the Citizens Bank Classic.

Chantzee Elliott scored five points to lead the Lady Coyotes.

“They are a good team,” coach Elliott said of Farwell, “but we didn’t ever play with fire during that game, which is not our style. It was a wake-up for us.”

Farwell wound up winning the tournament.

San Jon 48, Elida 8

San Jon held host Elida scoreless in the second half during a dominating 48-8 victory on Dec. 14.

Chanztee Elliott led the victorious Coyotes with 14 points, and Archuleta added 12.

“Our free throws were much improved from the first game,” coach Elliott said, referring to a 43-28 loss to Dora on Nov. 30. “We executed our press well and looked up the floor well with good ball movement. … I could see a lot of growth and improvement on the court from the last game to this game.”

Elliott also praised three second-stringers who scored — Dakota Fisher, Summer Jennings and Alexa Becerra.
