Those first two opening-round games were after the Quay County Sun’s deadline.

Melrose’s defense put the clamps on San Jon in the second quarter, allowing only two points. San Jon coach Jaree Elliott said Karlee Elliott spent much of the game on the bench due to foul trouble, but she praised Dakota Fisher “who made things happen on the court that fired the team up.”
Elliott noted five of her eight players scored, “which was something we’ve been wanting — to have than just a few in the books.”
San Jon finished the week 4-13 overall and 0-8 in District 6.
Melrose finished the week 16-7, 5-3.
Melrose 42, San Jon 27
Melrose used a 16-6 surge in the fourth quarter to pull away from host San Jon 42-27 during a district game on Feb. 14.
“We played excellent defense tonight,” coach Elliott said. “Our goal was to pick up where we left off when when played Logan on Thursday, and we did.
“We weren’t in foul trouble for once, but towards the end of the game we were playing harder instead of smarter on offense and we weren’t converting our possessions into points. Growth is definitely happening, and that’s a good thing.”
Chantzee Elliott scored 13 points to lead San Jon, and Sarah Archuleta added 10.
Graci Odom and Isabelle Sena each scored 13 points to lead the Lady Buffs (14-7, 4-3).
