Candidates' filing day is Tuesday

Local candidates for the June 7 primary election have only one day to officially file — Tuesday — at Quay County Clerk’s Office.

The filing day will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 8 at the office at 300 S. Third St. in Tucumcari.

Candidate forms are available at the New Mexico Secretary of State website at sos.state.nm.us, Quay County government site at quaycounty-nm.gov/elected-officals/county-clerk or at the clerk’s office.

This year, candidates must complete a candidate campaign committee registration form before becoming a candidate, stated Quay County Clerk Ellen White in a recent news release. Proof of the registration is required when filing for office on March 8.

“If you are considering running for office, we urge you to go online now to https://login.cfis.sos.state.nm.us/#/index and get yourself registered with the proper documentation required,” White stated. “Candidates must comply with the Campaign Reporting Act through this website with monthly reporting of campaign contributions and expenditures.”

White also offered several tips for prospective candidates on filing day:

• Candidates should arrive at the Quay County Clerk’s Office with a Declaration of Candidacy complete and proof of registration in the State Campaign Finance Information System.

• The filing fee for candidates is $50.

• Candidates should not expect early services. Times are specific, set by state law.

• Candidates should not wait until the last minute to file. Applications will not be accepted after 5 p.m.

These county offices will be up for election during the primary:

• County commission, District 3 (four-year term)

• Assessor (four-year term)

• Probate judge (four-year term)

• Sheriff (four-year term)

• Magistrate judge (four-year term)
