1972: Local merchants and shoppers again will be given the opportunity to study plans for the downtown area and decide whether they want the present closed-mall design, a modified mall design or leave downtown as it is, with no mall. The meeting (no date has been set up yet) was set up last night during a special meeting of the Urban Development Project Area Committee.

Committee Chairman Warren Ackerman said what appeared to be the problem in the previous week’s Urban Development meeting was a lack of communication between the board and downtown merchants. The hope with the forthcoming meeting is to fairly give everyone connected with downtown a chance to express their opinions and choose the plan they like best.

• Plans for the second annual Rattler Reunion are under way, with the Class of 1942 celebrating its 30th anniversary. Marion Farmer Knapp recently was in Tucumcari going over plans with Stanley Jennings and said they would be sending out newsletters in the near future. Rattler Reunion bumper stickers also will be available.

• Tucumcari High School sprinter Steve Romero set a district record by running the 100-yard dash in 9.8 seconds during a recent track meet at Clayton. The school’s mile relay team of Steve Schlientz, Gary Hittson, Clarence Marshall and Walter Hines also set a district record in a time of 3:31.4.

• The Canal Drive-In in Tucumcari announced its spring opening for tomorrow with the screening of three Burt Lancaster westerns: “Lawman,” “Valdez Is Coming” and “The Scalphunters.”
