Melrose edges Logan at Texico meet

The Logan boys and girls track teams looked strong Saturday, but district rival Melrose looked stronger at the Wolverines Relays in Texico.

The Buffaloes prevailed over the Longhorns 106-89 in points at the 10-team meet. The Lady Buffs also won easily over the runner-up Lady Longhorns 116-84 at the event.

The Tucumcari girls team finished fourth and the Rattler boys sixth at the meet. Other teams compiling points were Texico, Des Moines, Clayton, Dora, Grady, Clovis Christian, Floyd and Hagerman.

For the Longhorns, freshman Haden Judd won four individual events – 100-meter dash (11.53 seconds), 200-meter dash (0:23.57), 400-meter dash (0:52.14) and pole vault (11 feet). Logan also won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:42.49.

For the Rattlers, senior Khobie Salvador dominated two events – the discus (130 feet, 4 inches) and shot put (43-1). He prevailed by more than 30 feet in the discus and by more than 7 feet in the shot.

Tucumcari senior Manny Hernandez also won the 1,600-meter run in 5:28.96 by a margin of more than 30 seconds.

The Lady Longhorns won four relay races – the 400-meter relay (0:53.92), 800-meter relay (1:56.81), 1,600-meter relay (4:33.03) and 1,600-meter medley relay (5:10.51). However, Logan was shut out of the individual events Saturday.

For the Lady Rattlers, junior Alexus Lafferty won the javelin throw with an effort of 108-1, outdistancing the runner-up by more than 12 feet.

Tucumcari teammate Haisley Huffman won the long jump in 15-8, and Caylee Benavidez prevailed in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:45.24.
