Tuesday is deadline to register to vote for primary

Next Tuesday is the deadline for New Mexico residents to register to vote for the June 7 primary election.

That also is the day that early voting begins for the primary, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early voting will be held Monday through Thursday at the clerk’s office through June 4. The office will be open for early voting one Friday only, on June 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Quay County Clerk’s Office stated voter-registration forms are available there in the Quay County Courthouse at 300 S. Third St. in Tucumcari at or online at NMVote.org.

Those who are new residents to Quay County or need to update their registrations may do so through the same-day registration portal available during early voting in the clerk’s office. This method of registration requires additional identification and verification.

New Mexico requires voters to be registered with a major political party — Democrat, Libertarian or Republican — to vote in a primary election. Anyone who chooses no party or a minor party during voter registration will not be able to participate in the primary unless that change is made official by the county clerk.

Last week, the New Mexico Secretary of State began sending every registered voter who is eligible to vote an updated voter information card. Recipients should make sure their information and party affiliation are correct.

Anyone who will be 18 years old before the general election on Nov. 8 is eligible to register and vote in the primary election.

Sample ballots for the primary election also will be available at the clerk’s office or NMVote.org.

Absentee ballot applications for the primary election are now available at the Clerk’s Office and online at NMVote.org.

The Quay County Clerk’s Office this week was scheduled to undergo certification of its voting machines in the county commission chambers. The certification was open to the public.
