1972: A little bit of history walked into the front door of the Tucumcari Daily News when W.J. “Bill” Curren of Clovis paid a visit. He is the son of J.E. Curren, founder of The Pathfinder, which was Tucumcari’s first newspaper. Bill Curren posed next to a framed copy of The Pathfinder in the News’ office. J.E. Curren, known as “the fighting editor,” established the first newspaper in Tucumcari and launched other newspapers in Deming, Kingston, Lake Valley, Clovis, Melrose and Clayton.

• The Urban Development Agency in Tucumcari was awaiting word from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development office in Dallas on a claim by a former owner of a downtown building. Norman Hennig said the agency owed him $350 for cigarette machines that were destroyed when the building he had owned on Main Street was torn down. Urban Development officials said Hennig had signed a release on the building and received relocation fees. They also said Hennig was present when the building was torn down and gave the OK to proceed.

• Tucumcari received 0.27 of an inch of rain during last night’s shower. The total for the year was just 0.82 of an inch, while the normal precipitation through the month of June was 6.62 inches.
