1972: Fourteen motorcycle enthusiasts gathered for a meeting at the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce to form a local club.

They planned to organize an outing in front of the Elks Lodge on Sept. 24 for a one-hour scenic ride, then a dutch treat breakfast at Del’s Restaurant.

• Robin Powell, a former Tucumcari resident living in Albuquerque, won a New Mexico high-points saddle for her performance in the age 12-14 division during American Quarter Horse Youth Activities at the New Mexico State Fair. She also finished won the showmanship prize.

• The Odeon Theatre was screening a Clint Eastwood western, “Joe Kidd,” and was about to show “Fuzz,” a comedy starring Burt Reynolds, Raquel Welch and Yul Brynner.
