1972: Jacqueline Stout of Grady showed the Junior Sheep Show’s grand champion market lamb at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque out of a record 418 entries.
“I was really excited. I only cried once or twice,” she said when she realized her 5-month-old blackfaced mutton named Bill had won the big prize.
Rodney Batie of Tucumcari also won first prize at the fair with his pen of three blackfaced lambs.
• Fabrific Fabric Centers was advertising turbo acrylics for $1.49 a yard, Velvetex corduroy for $1.69 a yard, polyester crepe for $1.99 a yard and Stevens wool for $3.99 a yard.
• Hamlett’s Men’s Wear was advertising whaler jeans in Sanforized cotton for $8.50.
• An AMC Hornet hatchback was advertised for $2,399. Atlas car batteries ranged from $19.95 to $39.95, depending on expected lifespan. Windshield wiper refills were $3.95.
