1972: U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya flew to Tucumcari to be a guest of honor at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn in Tucumcari, sponsored by Democratic Precinct A-1.

Mayor King Aitken greeted Montoya at the airport, as did Quay County Democratic Chairman Lawrence Ingram and Chairwoman Helen Gordon.

During a speech, Montoya said “the war in Vietnam is unjust and we should get out of there. … I think it is about time we get out of Vietnam and use the billions we are spending there to educate out children.”

• Tucumcari High School was planning a Veterans Day program on Oct. 23 in Rhodes Field House, with speaker Craig Cosner and veterans from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam as honored guests.

• City police were investigating a burglary at the Tucumcari Electric Shop. Up to $1,600 in merchandise was stolen, including cigarette lighters, watches, electric razors, transistor radios and a TV set.

• The Rattlers football team improved to 4-1-1 with a 21-6 victory over Raton on Friday. Tucumcari outgained Raton 309-207 in total yards.
