Undefeated Melrose spikers topple Logan

An unbeaten Melrose volleyball team took the upper hand in the District 6 standings Saturday with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 victory at arch-rival Logan.

The Lady Buffaloes, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, improved to 16-0 overall and has lost only one set all season. They improved to 5-0 in the district.

Logan, ranked sixth in 1A, fell to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in district play.

“We didn’t look as good as we did when we played Fort Sumner,” Logan coach Glynna Strand said, referring to her team’s victory over the Vixens earlier in the week. “Still some things we need to work on to beat Melrose.”

The Lady Longhorns play in the regular-season finale at Melrose on Nov. 5.

Logan 3, Fort Sumner-House 1

The Lady Longhorns earned a somewhat easier district win Thursday against the Vixens than during their previous clash.

Logan defeated visiting Fort Sumner-House 11-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-15 after squeaking by the Vixens in the five-set match during the previous week.

Fort Sumner-House, ranked eighth in Class 1A, ended the week 9-8 overall and 5-2 in district play.

Grady 3, San Jon 0

Melrose 3, San Jon 0

San Jon dropped three district matches last week.

Fort Sumner-House toppled the visiting Lady Coyotes 25-8, 25-13, 25-10 on Saturday.

Grady toppled the visiting Lady Coyotes 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 on Thursday. Grady improved to 9-7, 1-3.

On Oct. 11, undefeated Melrose mowed down visiting San Jon by a 25-8, 25-7, 25-11 score.

San Jon ended the week 3-14 overall and 1-5 in district play.
