1973: Members of the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce had an unusual incentive to sell tickets to the chamber’s Feb. 20 banquet.
Two teams of ticket-sellers chaired by Gene Klaverweiden and Arnett Hooser have been divvied up to sell the tickets. The team with the most tickets sold will be served a steak dinner at the banquet, while the losing team will be served beans.
“Both teams will be out for blood,” the newspaper reported.
• Pharmacist Bob McClelland received the most votes during a Tucumcari Board of Education election to fill the seat by Dr. Kenneth Vinall, who did not seek re-election. McClelland received 408 votes to opponent Harold Ferguson’s 247.
• About $6,000 in merchandise was stolen from Surplus City during a burglary. The break-in, which happened about 2 a.m., occurred when someone broke a large glass door.
• About 450 people attended the annual meeting and enchilada dinner of the Quay County Credit Union at the Tucumcari Youth Recreation Center. The guest speaker, New Mexico Insurance Commissioner Ralph Apodaca, did not show up. Mayor King Aitken spoke in his place.
• The Tucumcari Rattlers basketball team earned its 11th win of the season by defeating the San Jon Coyotes 66-58. Ronnie Farrow led the Rattlers with 26 points, and Mark McCausland added 14. David Ayres scored 13 points for San Jon.
