Lady Rattlers earn No. 5 seed, host Cuba

The Tucumcari girls basketball team earned a No. 5 seed in the Class 3A tournament and will host 12th-seeded Cuba in the first round Friday.

Logan earned an ninth-seed for the Class 1A tournament and will travel to eighth-seeded Springer for its first-round game Friday.

Playoff pairings were announced by the New Mexico Activities Association on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Rattlers (19-6), which recently finished their district schedule unbeaten, will play the Lady Rams (16-14) at 6 p.m. Friday at Rattler Gymnasium, aka The Snake Pit.

The winner of that matchup will play the winner of fourth-seeded Tohatchi (20-9) versus 13th-seeded Socorro (9-18) in the quarterfinals on March 7 at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

Robertson (26-1) earned the top seed in Class 3A.

One of Tucumcari’s district foes, Ruidoso (11-16), earned a 14th-seed and will play against third-seeded Santa Fe Indian (20-7).

Dexter (9-18), earned a 15th-seed and plays No. 2 seed Navajo Prep (24-3) in the first round.

Logan (17-11) goes to Springer (20-6) for its first-round Class 1A game at 6 p.m. Friday. The Lady Longhorns lost their previous matchup to Springer 42-34 on Dec. 30.

The winner of that game likely will face top-seeded Melrose (24-1) in the quarterfinals on March 8 at Bernalillo High School. Melrose hosts 16th-seeded Cimarron (13-11) in its first-round matchup.

Logan lost all four matchups against Melrose this season, but one of them — a 72-66 loss on Jan. 19 — wasn’t decided until the last minute.

Logan’s district foe, Fort Sumner (16-9), earned a seventh-seed.

An area power, Roy-Mosquero (24-2), earned a No. 2 seed in the Class 1A tournament.

Semifinals and finals for the state tournaments will be March 9-10. Semifinal games will be at the Rio Rancho Events Center, and the championships will be at The Pit in Albuquerque.
