March 29, 2023

Seven Logan High School athletes will compete Friday in the NMAA Powerlifting Championships at Rio Rancho High School after qualifying for the event.

These Longhorns qualified in the Class 1A-3A championships in these weight classes:

— 148 pounds: Haden Judd and Izaiah Kneitz;

— 165 pounds: Christian Kotara;

— 181 pounds: Skyler DeLuca;

— 220 pounds: Park Strong;

— 275 pounds: Mason Wallin.

Judd is the highest-rated competitor in his weight class, lifting a total of 950 pounds in the squat, bench press and dead lift.

A total of six athletes qualified for state in each weight class.

In the girls Class 1A-5A championships, Bella Coronado was the lone Lady Longhorn to qualify.

She will compete in the 105-pound weight class. Twelve girls are chosen for state competition in each class.

The New Mexico Activities Association lists powerlifting as an activity and not an officially sanctioned sport. It will become an official NMAA sport in the 2023-2024 season.

Tucumcari approved adding powerlifting next winter. Nearly 60 schools in New Mexico currently are participating in the activity.

The Logan boys won the inaugural powerlifting state championships in 2021.
