Logan boys capture EPAC crown

LOGAN - Powered by sophomore Haden Judd's three individual victories and two runner-up finishes and a lot of team depth, the Logan boys captured the title at the eight-team EPAC Varsity Meet on Saturday.

The Logan girls team finished strong, too - second only to district rival Melrose.

Judd won the 400-meter dash (52.23 seconds), 110-meter hurdles (0:17.37) and the pole vault (11 feet). He finished runner-up to Texico sprinter Jahvon Askew in the 100-meter dash (0:11.86) and 200-meter dash (0:24.60).

The Longhorns finished with 144 1/2 points, edging Texico's 122 1/2 points. Melrose finished a distant third with 61 points.

Kaeden Stoner helped pile up team points for the Longhorns by winning the javelin throw (141-9 1/2), placing third in the 300-meter hurdles (0:45.45) and finishing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (0:18.9).

Logan's Hayden Bruhn won the 800-meter run (2:11.33), finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (0:55.38) and was sixth in the high jump (5-4).

Teammate Christopher Lucero prevailed in the 3,200-meter run (12:21.94) and finished third in the 1,600-meter run (5:43).

Other Longhorns who scored team points were:

- Brock Burns, second in high jump (5-6), third in the triple jump (37 4 3/4), second in the discus (120-9) and sixth in the javelin (110-2);

- Aydin Kotara, fourth in the 100-meter dash (0:12.40);

- Connor Moore, fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:46) and second in the 3,200-meter run (12:46.16);

- Christian Kotara, fourth in the triple jump (37-3);

- Izaiah Kneitz, fifth in the long jump (17-8 1/2);

In girls action, the Lady Longhorns finished runner-up to Melrose with 118 points, compared to the Lady Buffs' 140. Texico finished third with 90 points.

Logan's Kaylee Williams won three events - the 100-meter dash (0:13.79), 200-meter dash (0:29.12) and the triple jump (34-10 1/2).

Haylie Bidegain won the 800-meter run in 2:36.78 for the Lady Longhorns and finished third in the triple jump (30-0).

Logan's 400-meter relay team emerged victorious in a time of 0:53.96, as did the 800-meter relay (1:53.52) and 1,600-meter sprint medley (4:56.18).

Others who scored points for the Lady Longhorns were:

- Makinlee Judd, second in 100-meter dash (0:14.02), second in the 300-meter hurdles (0:54.02) and second in the long jump (14-3);

- Abby Paris, sixth in the 200-meter dash (0:32.24), third in the 400-meter dash (1:14.62) and second in the discus (92-6 1/2);

- Aspen Casey, second in the 400-meter dash (1:13.94) and third in the 100-meter hurdles (0:21.85);

- Sadie Bruhn, second in the 1,600-meter run (6:53.26) and fifth in the triple jump (28-8);

- Desta Rose, fourth in the high jump (4-2);

- 1,600-meter relay team, fourth (4:47.45);

- 3,200-meter relay team, second (11:56.08).

Logan will go to Saturday's district meet at Melrose, which will largely determine which individuals or teams go to the Class 1A state championships in Albuquerque.

Santa Rosa Invite

The Tucumcari boys and girls teams each finished third at the 14-team Santa Rosa High School Invitational on Friday.

For the Lady Rattlers, Haisley Huffman won two events and helped a relay team win a third.

She won the long jump with an effort of 16 feet and the triple jump with a distance of 31-10.

In relays, Huffman with July Lafferty, Aubriana French and Cambree Benevidez crossed the finish line first in the 400-meter relay in a state-qualifying 52.95 seconds. The same team also finished third in the 800-meter relay in 1:54.88.

Tucumcari's 1,600-meter relay team of Lafferty, Benavidez, Caylee Benavidez and Kylie'Ann Rincones also won in a time of 4:38.29.

Other Lady Rattlers who scored team points were:

- French, fifth in the 100-meter dash (0:14.23);

- Caylee Benavidez, second, discus (84-7);

- Alexus Lafferty, second, javelin (94-2);

- July Lafferty, third, javelin (91-2);

- Kyla Lopez, fifth, 100-meter hurdles (0:18.93) and fourth, 300-meter hurdles (0:55.12);

- 1,600-meter sprint medley, eighth (5:33.62).

Santa Rosa won the girls team title with 107 points. Robertson was second with 68, and Tucumcari was a close third with 64 1/2.

In boys action, Tucumcari's Fernando Ureste won the 3,200-meter run in 10:57.78, edging Springer's Devin Tafoya by more than four seconds.

Ureste finished second in the 1,600-meter run in 5:09, less than two seconds slower than Tristan Pierce of Maxwell.

Other Rattlers who scored team points were:

- Curtis Gonzales, sixth, long jump (17-9);

- 1,600-meter relay of Urioste, Diaz, Gonzales and Martinez, second (3:49.70).

Santa Rosa cruised to the boys team title with 145 points. Clayton was second with 69 points, and Tucumcari totaled 46.

Tucumcari is scheduled to go to the district meet Friday at Dexter, which will determine which individuals or teams will qualify for the state meet the following week in Albuquerque.
