1973: A Tucumcari man died instantly when the car he was driving struck the second trailer of a large Transcom truck near the Y Truck Stop.

Moses Aaron Griego, 26, was declared dead at the scene.

City police reported the Griego vehicle was going east while the Transcom truck was pulling out of the West Fina Truck Stop.

Griego’s car hit the back of the trailer, went under it, sheared off a light pole and struck a parked car.

— Milton Terry, a Quay County commissioner and resident of San Jon, was elected president of the New Mexico Association of Counties during its 37th annual conference in Las Cruces. Terry was vice president of the organization.

— State police investigated a two-car accident at a bridge 13 miles east of Tucumcari on U.S. 66. A woman from Ohio and a 5-month-old baby belonging to a couple from Oregon were injured.

— Gladys Brewer was retiring from Tucumcari Public Schools for 36 years. She had taught at Buena Vista and Zia schools.

— Dairy Queen was advertising a “scrumpdillyishus” 39-cent Hot Fudge Brownie Delight sundae for Mother’s Day.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “Pete & Tillie,” starring Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett; “Wonder Women,” starring Nancy Kwan; and the sci-fi film “Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster.”
