1973: A Tucumcari man was nabbed with 800 pounds of marijuana worth nearly $250,000 during an apparent airborne attempt to smuggle it into the region.

According to the Bernalillo County sheriff, the man was arrested on conspiracy to possess and conspiracy with intent to distribute marijuana.

A low-flying aircraft dumped the bundle of marijuana attached to a parachute over Tijeras Canyon southeast of Albuquerque. The marijuana was hidden under bales of alfalfa.

The man was arrested when he drove a four-wheel drive vehicle right to the spot where the marijuana was stashed.

— George Lovato, commissioner of the New Mexico Department of Motor Vehicles, made a field visit to the Tucumcari office, which was being run by Mary Jiminez.

— Nettie Harrelson, a former president of the New Mexico CowBelles, was leaving the Tucumcari area. She served on the Quay County Fair Board and portrayed Minnie Pearl in the Kiwanis’ annual Amateur Show.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “Jeremiah Johnson,” starring Robert Redford, and next was set to screen “The Valachi Papers,” starring Charles Bronson.
