Quay County eliminated at district softball tourney

The Quay County Little League All-Stars fast-pitch softball team’s first-ever foray in to the postseason was a short one, with it losing both its games Saturday at the District 4 Tournament in Las Vegas.

Quay County, an age 9 to 11 team, dropped its opener 16-4 to Las Vegas on Saturday morning, then was eliminated 19-1 by La Plaza later that day during the double-elimination tourney.

Quay County coach Jakus Martinez said nerves and a lack of experience bedeviled his team.

“It was the small things, the little plays, that separated us,” he said. “The other teams have a little more experience, and that was the big difference.

“Now they have their feet wet,” Martinez added. “It was a great experience for them. Now we have to get them ready for next year.”

The Quay County squad consisted primarily of members from a Lady Tigers squad that finished 10-2 during the regular season, plus the best players from the Bulldogs, the Sooners and Logan.

La Plaza, which suffered a loss early in the tournament, stayed alive by defeating Las Vegas on Sunday.

The championship game between the two teams was scheduled for Monday afternoon, which is after the Quay County Sun’s deadline.
