1973: A nationwide gasoline shortage was beginning to affect the Quay County region.

Local fuel distributors said they were being allotted only so much gasoline and diesel, though they’ve yet to run out. Station owners said they didn’t have a problem for now but expected shortages in the future.

Municipalities were dealing with higher fuel costs, and one supplier for Tucumcari could commit only to a six-month supply. At the city’s power plant, it increased its auxiliary supply from five days to 16.

The shortages already have affected local tourism, with fewer travelers coming through Tucumcari.

— Tucumcari’s annual Independence Day fireworks display was set for 9:30 p.m. on July 3 at the Little League Ball Park. The show, which cost $1,125, was expected to last for 30 minutes. The Tucumcari Cowboy Club also was set to hold a roping event and barbecue dinner.

— The Safeway market in Tucumcari was advertising sliced bacon for 99 cents a pound, bologna for 79 cents a pound and cooked ham for 65 cents a pound.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing a Disney double-feature of “Charlie and the Angel” and “Cinderella.” Coming next was was the Winston Churchill biopic “Young Winston,” starring Robert Shaw and Anne Bancroft.
