State fire marshal announces local fire-protection grants

The Quay County municipalities of Tucumcari, Logan, House and San Jon, plus nine rural fire departments, each are receiving annual grants from the state fire marshal’s office.

The four cities or villages in the county received a total of $860,000 in grants from the state. The nine rural fire districts received almost $1 million total.

The total grants by municipality or fire district are:

— Tucumcari, $316,659;

— Logan, $274,420;

— San Jon, $196,378;

— House, $73,347;

— Bard-Ended district, $212,474;

— Conservancy District 1, $126,822;

— Conservancy District 2, $71,646;

— Conservancy District 3, $69,623;

— Forrest district, $77,361;

— Jordan district, $131,326;

— Nara Visa district, $52,485;

— Porter district, $77,518;

— Quay district, $67,988;

— Quay County administration, $94,999.

The state fire marshal’s office on Monday announced in a news release a total of 99 municipalities received $29.3 million, with 257 county stations also receiving about $40.7 million.

A total of $75.8 million in state fire-protection funds was distributed for fiscal year 2024, a 5.6% increase over the fiscal year 2023 distribution of $71.7 million.

The New Mexico Fire fund is funded through a small portion of insurance premiums.

“The State Fire Marshal’s office is pleased to provide this vital funding to departments large and small across the state. I know that a well-funded and well-trained department is important for everyone’s safety and with this funding, we’re supporting operations, equipment and training at a record level,” State Fire Marshal Randy Varela stated in the news release.
