Serving the High Plains

Mesalands looking toward future opportunities

This has certainly been an eventful spring here at Mesalands. I want to thank the students, staff, faculty, and community for their ongoing support of Mesalands Community College. We are especially thankful for our students returning this fall semester and our faculty and staff who have remained to continue serving our students. We have overcome many obstacles since the spring and while there are still several to overcome, we are looking ahead to the future. We ask for patience as we navigate a lean year and continue to serve our mission in providing a post-secondary education to our community.

The New Mexico Higher Education Department (HED) will continue to assess the future of Mesalands Community College. This will be completed through financial oversight, surveys, and other studies to determine the viability of the college and its future. We are asking for the community’s participation and support in the coming valuations. The community’s insight and needs will drive the mission and direction of the college. Our hope is to come through this stronger than ever.

With support from the New Mexico Higher Education Department (HED), the Office of the State Auditor for New Mexico, and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), we are enrolling students for the fall semester. Wind Energy, Nursing, Paleontology, Cowboy Arts/Silversmithing, Fine Arts and more are still available and will continue to be offered. With these programs and our general education credits, a student can obtain a work credential, certificate, an associates, or the first two years of a four-year degree. Our students will continue to compete in our nationally ranked rodeo program, while also competing in E-Sports and golf this year. Mesalands will host our fall college rodeo October 13th and14th. This weekend (July 28-30) the Mesalands Community College Foundation will work closely with our golf team in its inaugural golf tournament hosted by our city municipal golf course. Mesalands will also work to provide more student activities, events, and cultural celebrations for students to participate in.

With support from state initiatives, area residents have the opportunity to obtain college credit at little or no cost. Due to the Lottery Scholarship, Opportunity Scholarship, low tuition costs and more, now is the time to think about furthering your education. Locally, students can take courses that are transferable to all New Mexico universities and colleges. Whether you are a recent high school graduate or are considering other possibilities in the job market, Mesalands Community College leads the way in career training and academic excellence. Fall enrollment is underway. If you have any questions, please give us a call (575-461-6600).

For the future, Mesalands is exploring opportunities to work with area school districts, area businesses, city and county governments, and other entities in the Quay County area. We are working to become more involved in the community we serve.

It is our hope to provide more educational opportunities than ever before. Only by working together will we see a successful future.
