San Jon's third win equals last season's

The San Jon volleyball team prevailed Thursday in a five-set battle at non-district foe Dora, equaling the number of wins the Lady Coyotes compiled all of last season.

Down 2-1 in sets, San Jon rallied and eventually emerged victorious 19-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-10, 15-8.

San Jon coach Bobby Kandel said his team turned in an “amazing” performance against Dora.

“They really had to fight back from the depths a few times,” he said. “They really dug deep on this one.”

Addie Lafferty and Sarah Archuleta each notched seven kills during the match. Alexa Becerra added seven aces.

The team wore the number three on their cheeks in tribute to Javion Martinez, a Tucumcari freshman football player who died Aug. 26. Martinez was a San Jon student through sixth grade. Students also wore Tucumcari’s colors purple and gold during the week in support of Martinez’s family.

“Javion’s mom was there (at the match), so the pressure was really on,” Kandel said.

Dora fell to 0-2.
