1973: A rash of crimes were reported in Tucumcari.

An employee at Michael’s Mobil station on West Tucumcari Boulevard told officers he had been hit over the head and robbed. He said the robber pumped $4.60 in gasoline without paying for it.

A woman on South First Street reported someone broke into her home and stole a man’s pocket watch, woman’s gold watch and a ring.

Another woman reported a house on South Second Street was ransacked, with a .22-caliber rifle stolen from it.

— Lloyd Widdifield of Tucumcari and his horse, Sultan’s Dream, were reserve champion in the fine harness competition at the New Mexico State Fair.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing the latest James Bond film, “Live and Let Die.” It was the first 007 movie to star Roger Moore.

— Wilt Chamberlain, after 15 years in the NBA, jumped to the rival ABA and signed with the San Diego Conquistadors as a player-coach. His previous team, the Los Angeles Lakers, insisted he still was under contract.
