Mountain lions sighted in Logan

The Logan Police Department has confirmed at least one incident of a mountain lion attacking a domestic cat and of numerous reports of the big cats wandering throughout the village.

The department stated in a social media post last week it has contacted New Mexico Game & Fish for advice about the matter and is working with the agency.

“We are asking the public to help us to not inadvertently attract these cats,” the department stated. “Please do not leave anything outside that would attract animals to include pet foods.

“It is also suggested to not leave smaller domestic animals out overnight. We must remember that when we choose to feed the smaller more docile wildlife, we are inviting their larger natural predators to come into Village limits.”

Residents have videotaped the mountain lions, also known as cougars, in their yards, or surveillance cameras have spotted them.

New Mexico Game & Fish said mountain lions are native to the Logan area.

Adult male cougars can measure up to to 8 feet long and weigh 150 to 200 pounds. Adult female cougars can be up to 7 feet long and weight 90 to 110 pounds.

Logan residents who have questions or want to report mountain lion sightings should call New Mexico Game & Fish at (575) 447-0022. In an emergency, residents should dial 911.
