1973: Sharon Block of Tucumcari, the state winner of the 4-H food-nutrition award, met with famous newspaper advice columnist Ann Landers during the 52nd annual National 4-H Congress in Chicago.

The “Ask Ann Landers” column ran for 56 years, mostly written by Eppie Lederer from 1955 until her death in 2002.

Winners from 50 states and Puerto Rico were guests of General Foods Corp., sponsor of the National 4-H Food-Nutrition program that is conducted by the cooperative extension service and arranged by the National 4-H Committee.

About 700,000 children participated in the national program, one of the largest in the 4-H movement.

— Tucumcari High School hosted its first-ever girls basketball game, with a contest against the House Cowgirls. The Rattlerettes, as they were known at the time, lost 51-39. Tucumcari’s next game was scheduled to be at San Jon.

— The Tucumcari-Quay County Chamber of Commerce elected five new board members to three-year terms: Jimmy Randals, Julius Fitzner, Francis Springer, Joe Cooper and the Rev. Gene Richardson. Retiring directors were Bob Balch, Bob Sanders, James Dow, James Douglas and Horace Wood.

— The Odeon Theatre was screening a horror double feature of “Scream Blacula Scream” starring William Marshall and Pam Grier, plus “Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde.”
