1973: Expressing “total embarrassment” over a “typographical error,” the federal government revised its announced 25% cut in gasoline supplies to 5% from last year’s level.

The Federal Energy Office had announced the previous day that refiners were being ordered to cut gasoline production 25% from 1972 levels. The announcement was carried by all news media.

Later that evening, the FEO said it meant to announce a 5% cut from 1972 levels and blamed the error on a typo.

FEO information officer Jonathan Brown expressed “total embarrassment” on behalf of his agency. The typo caught high Washington officials by surprise.

— Charlotte Ann Thomas of Tucumcari took home six trophies, including four perfect scores, in solo, strut and military marching at the New Mexico Band Festival in Lovington. She is eligible for national competition in St. Paul, Minnesota.

— More than 250 people attended the Federal Land Bank Association of Tucumcari’s annual stockholder meeting. They elected Henry Mallette of Las Vegas and Harold V. Davis of Folsom to three-year terms on the board of directors. Also elected were Jack Akins, Lewis Caton and David Kidd to the nominating committee, with Glen Franklin and Gene Stockton as alternates.

— Gov. Bruce King presented the Basis O’Connor Memorial Award to Quay County March of Dimes Chairman Joe Dominguez during the state March of Dimes meeting in Albuquerque. Quay County was honored for having the largest percentage increase — 131% — in donations.
