Logan girls suffer two tough losses

The Logan girls basketball team struggled during two losses last week, including a 58-46 loss Thursday at defending Class A champion and unbeaten Roy-Mosquero.

The Lady Longhorns had the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Blue surged late to earn the win.

Desta Rose led Logan with 15 points, and Camryn Cantrell added 13.

“We played hard,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “We didn’t hit as many shots as we needed to beat a team of that caliber. But we seem to be progressing in the right direction. Hopefully these tougher opponents before district play will help us in the long run.”

Cantrell’s traditional 3-point play and a fastbreak basket gave Logan a 44-41 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

But the Lady Blue finished with a 17-2 run to put it out of reach. The meat of Roy-Mosquero’s rally began after Logan starting center Laramie Shields left the game with a sprained ankle.

Roy-Mosquero improved to 7-0 and was ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in last week’s coaches poll.

Logan 59, Des Moines 31

The Lady Longhorns roared to an 8-0 early lead and made a 15-2 scoring run in the second quarter during a 59-31 victory Saturday at Des Moines.

Rose scored 21 points to lead Logan, with Cantrell adding 12 and Hailee Robertson 11.

Des Moines rallied to within 17-14 early before Logan made its big second-period run.

“We played horrible to begin the game,” coach Robertson said. “Then we tightened everything up. Defense got better. Rebounding got more intense. Shots started falling.”

Logan led 32-16 at intermission and 46-26 after three quarters.

Logan finished the week with a 5-3 record. Des Moines fell to 4-4.

Boise City 59, Logan 42

The Lady Longhorns suffered their second loss in as many days with a 59-42 decision Friday at Boise City, Oklahoma.

Rose led the Lady Longhorns with 15 points, and Lizzy Horner added 11.

“We lost to a really tough team,” coach Robertson said, noting his team’s shooting troubles continued with a 3-for-12 performance from the 3-point line.

“But I see improvement in practice, so I know it will translate to the games at some point,” he added.

Boise City improved to 5-2.

Elida 45, San Jon 26

San Jon’s Dakota Fisher scored a team-high 10 points during a 45-26 non-district loss to Elida on Dec. 11.

Alexa Bacerra added seven points for the Lady Coyotes (1-3), and Charlotte Graham totaled nine rebounds.

Elida ended the week with a 6-5 record.
