Longhorns improve to 8-0

The Logan boys basketball team improved to 8-0 on the season, but Des Moines didn’t make it easy.

Brock Burns scored four points in the final minute to secure a 56-53 comeback victory Saturday at Des Moines. Burns finished with 18 points. Teammate Hayden Bruhn also scored 18 points.

The Demons (6-2) led by as much as 16 points in the second quarter.

“They came out in the first half and really outplayed us,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said.

The Longhorns closed the gap to 33-27 with a 10-0 run, including two straight buckets after steals during the final seconds before intermission.

That momentum carried over into the second half, when Logan rallied to a 42-37 lead after the third quarter.

“Turning point in the game was our defense,” Griffiths said. “We held them to only four points in the third quarter.”

Several times in the fourth period, the Demons rallied to within two points and once narrowed it to one with less than a minute left.

Diego Sanchez scored an inside bucket, and a fastbreak basket by Burns with a minute left gave his team a 54-50 lead.

Des Moines drained a 3-pointer to narrow Logan’s lead to one point. The Longhorns worked the clock until Burns was fouled with nine seconds left. He made both free throws to give his team a 56-53 lead.

The Demons attempted a 3-pointer during the final seconds, but it was well off the mark. A putback attempt after an offensive rebound also missed before the final buzzer.

“Des Moines is a really good team who will be playing in March at the state tournament,” Griffiths said. “Proud of how we handled adversity in a tough environment.”

Logan, 75, Boise City 38

After a slow start, Logan surged in the second half during a 75-38 victory Friday over visiting Boise City, Oklahoma.

“In the second half, our defensive intensity picked up, and we were able to get some things going on the offensive end, as well,” Griffiths said.

Mason Wallin scored 17 points to lead the Longhorns, with Burns, Aydin Kotara and Bruhn each adding 10 points.

Boise City fell to 2-4.

Logan 89, Roy-Mosquero 58

The Longhorns handled Roy-Mosquero for a second time this season, this time by an 89-58 margin on Thursday.

Wallin scored 28 points to lead Logan, and Sanchez added 15.

Griffiths said despite the score, Roy-Mosquero wasn’t a pushover.

“They are a solid team and came to play,” he said. “We struggled in stretches but overall proud of how we responded.”

Roy-Mosquero fell to 3-4.
