Longhorns conquer Rattlers, improve to 10-0

Storming to a 20-2 first-quarter lead, the Logan boys basketball team cruised to an 86-48 victory Friday over county rival Tucumcari to improve to 10-0 on the season.

The Rattlers went through long periods of shooting woes during the game at Logan. THS coach Gary Hittson attributed his team’s erratic scoring to all the effort expended during a comeback win over state-ranked Raton the night before.

“I think we had a big-night hangover after the win against Raton,” he said. “We could not buy a bucket.”

Hittson said his team rebounded well again, with 35. But the Rattlers committed 19 turnovers and shot just 35% from the field.

Daymion Urioste led Tucumcari the 16 points, and Luis Archuleta added 14. Jordan Rincones added 10 rebounds.

Logan led 23-7 after the first quarter, 40-21 at halftime and 68-40 after the third period.

Hayden Bruhn scored 22 points to lead the Longhorns, and Brock Burns added 19.

“We played really well early and then had a slow start again to the second half before we finally picked it back up,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We need to learn to sustain our energy for an entire game.

“But we have had a tremendous start to the season and hope we carry that into second half of the year.”

Though Logan has logged a strong start to the season, its district schedule begins soon, and it’s no guarantee it will win it. Defending state champion Fort Sumner destroyed Clayton 100-37 on Friday, and perennial state contender Melrose whipped Eunice 52-27.

Logan 69, Santa Rosa 64

After leading by more than 20, the Longhorns survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback bid by the Lions but survived with a 69-64 win Thursday.

Logan led Santa Rosa 21-9 after the first quarter, 45-22 at halftime and 60-44 after three periods.

But the Lions scored 20 points in the final quarter and cut their deficit to just four points at one point.

“Santa Rosa really turned up the pressure in the second half, and we had some costly turnovers,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We have to be able to take care of the ball better late in the game. They are a good team, so overall I’m happy that we were able to hang on for the win.”

Hayden Bruhn scored 22 points to lead the Longhorns. Kaeden Stoner added 11 points and Brock Burns 10 points.

Santa Rosa fell to 3-3.
