1974: Gasoline prices today rose to more than 50 cents per gallon in many parts of the country.

That drove the cost of premium gasoline at the pump to 56.8 cents per gallon in Chicago and 57.9 cents at some stations in Washington, D.C.

The increases were being caused by widespread fuel shortages.

Meanwhile, the Internal Revenue Service was investigating reports of price-gouging nationwide, including a Chicago gas station operator who saw his license suspended for the alleged offense.

— The state highway department stated it was preparing for the switch to a federally imposed 55 mph speed limit on all roads after President Richard Nixon signed the bill that week.

— Jess Goldston and Marvin Terry each announced they were running for Quay County magistrate judge. Pat Clark announced she was running for county clerk.

— The Quay County sheriff’s department was investigating burglaries at Cromers Grocery and Logan Food Market, both in Logan. The thief stole the latter store’s safe.

— Southern Union Gas Co. was selling a Speed Queen clothes dryer for $178.88 and washer for $238.88. With the purchase, it was offering a free Bumbershoot umbrella.

— The Odeon Theatre was showing “Little Big Man,” starring Dustin Hoffman, and “A Man Called Horse,” starring Richard Harris.
