Year in review: Change in the air

The ouster of two Tucumcari city commissioners - including its mayor - during the November election signaled that voters wanted change.

Commissioners Paul Villanueva and Mayor Ralph Moya - the latter a veteran of over 20 years in city government - fell to defeat to Jonathan Brito and Jerry Lopez, respectively.

With the appointment or election of two additional commissioners, Tucumcari's governing body will have four new members in 2024.

A severe storm that brought torrential rain and baseball-size hail in May continued to have ripple effects into the second half of the year.

Tucumcari residents and municipalities continued to deal with battered roofs and other property from the hail. County workers labored to make flood-damaged roads passable.

Quay County also discovered that a flood-destroyed $4 million bridge just days from completion lacked insurance coverage.

As the bridge's architect and builder pointed fingers, the county failed suit against them and the state insurance authority in an effort to find a resolution.

In the meantime, residents had to drive 30 miles around the detour.

The local irrigation district also allocated water from Conchas Lake for the first time in more than three years.

The top stores of the second half of 2023 are listed by the edition date of the Quay County Sun.
