Vixens conquer Logan girls in Reserve final

A slow start doomed the Logan girls basketball team against Fort Sumner during a 57-38 loss Saturday in the championship game of the Reserve Tournament.

The Vixens made seven of their 11 3-point shots in the first half to surge to a 30-11 lead at halftime.

Allyssa Casaus led the charge for Fort Sumner, scoring 17 of her game-high 21 points during the half.

The Lady Longhorns, meanwhile, went seven minutes without a field goal.

“We looked tired, sluggish and worn out,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “The weekend and the long trip caught up with us. But you could say the same about Fort Sumner … so bottom line, we got outworked.”

A full-court press at the beginning of the third quarter sparked Logan to a 17-5 scoring run to reduce its deficit to 35-28.

The Vixens regained control with seven unanswered points to close the period.

Lizzy Horner led Logan with 13 points.

Logan, ranked fifth in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, fell to 12-6.

Fort Sumner improved to 13-4 and is ranked third in 1A.

The Eagles regained possession with four seconds remaining, but their long pass downcourt in an attempt to set up a final shot was picked off by a Logan defender.

Logan briefly trailed by one point early in the quarter, but Camryn Cantrell scored a traditional three-point play and Robertson sank a 3-pointer to give their team a 42-37 lead.
