1973: In a hard-hitting State of the Union address, President Richard Nixon vowed to remain in office despite a growing Watergate scandal.

Nixon also pledged to cooperate with the House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment inquiry but indicated he may refuse to turn over White House documents and tapes on grounds of executive privilege.

“I want you to know that I have no intention whatsoever of walking away from the job that the people elected me to do,” he said as Republican supporters applauded loudly.

Nixon would resign from office in August.
