Longhorns fall to Buffs in district semifinals

The third-seeded Logan boys basketball team fell into a 17-point deficit in the third quarter and never could climb back out of it during a 73-66 loss Thursday at second-seeded Melrose in the semifinals of the district tournament.

The Longhorns (23-5) trailed 35-28 at intermission, and that gap grew to 54-37 midway through the third period.

Logan several times rallied to within six points in the fourth quarter but drew no closer.

“We dug ourselves in a hole in the beginning of the third quarter,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “Defensively, we weren’t playing with enough intensity. We picked it up and made a run, but it’s tough to come back from being 17 down.”

Brock Burns led the Longhorns with 31 points.

Melrose improved to 23-3 overall.

The Buffs fell in defeat to top-seeded Fort Sumner by a 72-68 score in the district tournament final on Saturday.

The Longhorns earned the No. 5 seed in the Class 1A playoffs and will open with 12th-seeded Roy-Mosquero at 6 p.m. Saturday in Logan. (See other story in this edition.)

Logan 74, Grady 50

The Longhorns raced to an 11-0 lead, then hit the cruise control during a 74-50 home victory over fourth-seeded Grady last Tuesday in the first round of the district tournament.

Logan led 19-12 after the first quarter, 40-23 at intermission and 64-27 after the third period.

Hayden Bruhn scored 21 points to lead the Longhorns. Mason Wallin added 17 points and Burns 12.

Grady fell to 10-13 and went winless in district play.
