Longhorns blow late leads in Gateway doubleheader

Logan blew two late leads during a baseball doubleheader loss Friday to Gateway Christian at Roswell.

In the first game, the Longhorns led 7-5 at the top of the final inning, but the Warriors rallied for three runs to win it 8-7.

In the nightcap, Logan commanded a 10-1 lead in the sixth but lost it completely when Gateway scored 13 runs in the bottom half of that inning during a 14-10 loss.

“Our youth and inexperience in big games showed a little yesterday,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We have some new pieces that we are working into the lineup. After only a week of practice, our pitchers’ arms aren’t in shape for an entire game, so we were pitching by committee.

“However, with a 7-5 lead in the last inning of the first game and a 10-1 lead in the sixth inning of Game 2, we have to figure out a way to win those games.”

In the first game, Diego Sanchez went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kaeden Stoner went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Aydin Kotara went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Kotara, Stoner and Brock Burns combined on the mound for 11 strikeouts, four walks and eight hits allowed. Just three of the eight runs they allowed were earned.

In the nightcap, Kotara drove in two runs. Sanchez, Burns, Izaiah Kneitz and Mason Wallin each had two hits.

Logan used four pitchers during the game, including three in the final inning. Burns was the most effective, going five innings with one earned run allowed and 11 strikeouts.

Logan fell to 1-2.

Gateway Christian, perennial state contenders in Class 1A, improved to 3-2.

Logan was scheduled to have a rematch with Gateway at home Monday (the game was after the Quay County Sun’s deadline).

Logan 26, Floyd 1

The Longhorns blasted the visiting Broncos 26-1 in five innings in the season opener for both teams on March 26.

Logan broke the game open with a 10-run second inning and added eight runs in the third.

The Longhorns totaled 24 hits during the game, which was shortened by the mercy rule.

Mitchell Wall went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four runs batted in. Kneitz, Sanchez and Wallin each totaled three RBI.

A Longhorns pitching committee of Kotara, Stoner and Burns combined for 12 strikeouts, four walks and just one hit allowed in five innings.
