Haisley Huffman won two individual events and finished runner-up in another as the Tucumcari girls track team finished a strong second Saturday at the Mario Martinez Qualifier meet at Fort Sumner.
The Lady Rattlers finished with 60 points, behind only Class 1A defending champion Melrose at the 13-team meet.
Huffman, a senior, easily won the long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 7 3/4 inches and the triple jump with an effort of 35-8. She is the defending Class 3A champion in both events.
She also was a member of the winning 400-meter relay team with Caylee Benavidez, Aubriana French and Kyla Lopez in a time of 0:54.71.
Huffman also finished second in the 100-meter dash in 14.02 seconds, behind Karen Inge of Dora.
Kirksey Smith of Tucumcari won the shot put competition with a distance of 29-11 1/2. She was fifth in the discus with a distance of 76-9.
Tucumcari’s 800-meter relay team also finished first with a time of 2:03.
Other Lady Rattlers who scored team points were:
— French, fifth, long jump (13-3 3/4), and third, triple jump (32-5);
— Benavidez, fourth, discus (82-11);
— Lopez, fourth, 100-meter hurdles (0:20.11).
In boys competition, Tucumcari’s Fernando Ureste won the 800-meter run (2:12.48) and Alex Bueno De La O won the 3,200-meter run (11:15.0) respectively.
Other Rattlers who scored team points were:
— Luis Archuleta, fourth, long jump (17-11), and fifth, triple jump (33-2);
— Antonio Gonzales, fourth, javelin (106-7);
— 400-meter relay team, third, (0:48.36).
The Rattlers finished seventh in the team competition with 27 points.
Clovis captured the team title with 71 points, while Santa Rosa was runner-up with 64.
The Logan and San Jon girls and boys teams were scheduled to compete at the meet but canceled their trips because of high winds in the region.
