1974: Tucumcari and the surrounding area were scheduled to host the 38th annual convention of the New Mexico chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.

More than 150 postmasters were expected to attend.

The event included a get-together at the Tucumcari Elks Lodge, a tour of Conchas Dam, cruises on the lake, a buffet dinner at the Conchas Fishing and Ski Lodge and a golf tournament at the Mesa Country Club.

— Tucumcari Retail Merchants discussed plans for the grand opening of the downtown mall, including a $50 savings bond to the winner of the Name the Mall Contest. The May 24 event included free drinks and popsicles after the ribbon-cutting.

— Tucumcari High School pitcher Randy Love pitched his team to a 2-1 victory over Robertson. Love threw a one-hitter, allowing the only run in the first inning on two walks and a single. Love also hit the game-winning RBI single.

— The Odeon Theatre was screening “The Conversation,” with Gene Hackman portraying surveillance expert Harry Caul. The film’s director was Francis Ford Coppola, who directed “The Godfather” films and “Apocalypse Now.”

— The Safeway store in Tucumcari was selling strawberries for 39 cents a pint, 10 ears of corn for 99 cents and four red apples for $1. It also offered assorted mums for Mother’s Day.
