Rattlers drop two in season finale

Tucumcari’s baseball team finished its regular season with a district doubleheader loss Saturday at East Mountain by scores of 13-0 and 17-0.

After starting the season with a decent 3-5 record, the Rattlers lost 12 district games in a row.

East Mountain improved to 18-7 overall and captured the district title with an 11-1 mark, edging No. 2-ranked New Mexico Military Institute by one game.

East Mountain is ranked fourth in Class 3A by MaxPreps.com.

In the first game, the Rattlers managed just one hit against Timberwolves pitchers Cole Darnell and Luke Stoerner. They combined for 10 strikeouts and just one walk allowed.

The Rattlers also committed six errors.

In the second game, four East Mountain pitchers combined for a no-hitter. They walked three and struck out seven.

The Timberwolves mashed 17 hits against Tucumcari.

Tucumcari coach George Montano admitted the season “wasn’t what I expected it to be.”

“We’re talented,” he said. “We just gotta put it together consistently. I just want the best for these guys. Gonna take a few weeks to re-evaluate some things. Don’t feel it’s all settled in for me yet.”

The Rattlers are losing three seniors — pitcher-outfielder Oscar Angel, first baseman Juano Martinez and junior varsity player Harley Smith.

Tucumcari dropped a district doubleheader to state-ranked New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell by scores of 11-0 and 14-0 last Tuesday.

In the first game, the Rattlers managed just two hits — singles by Josh Griego and Pat Garcia — against Colts pitchers Luis Patron and Cole Seidenberger. Patron walked four and struck out four.

The Colts, which totaled 11 hits, grabbed an 11-0 lead after two innings off starter Kamren Apodaca. Nick Goen pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

In the second game, NMMI scored 11 runs in the first inning to take control. Tucumcari damaged its cause with seven errors.

The Rattlers again managed just two hits against Colts pitchers Richard West and Noah Martinez, who combined to walk two and struck out four.

NMMI, ranked second in Class 3A by MaxPreps.com, improved to 14-6 overall.
