Six Longhorns make all-district team

Six players from Logan's state runner-up baseball team earned all-district honors in voting announced after the state tournament.

Seniors Brock Burns, Kaeden Stoner and Izaiah Kneitz, junior Diego Sanchez and sophomores Mason Wallin and Devin Kotara of the Longhorns earned the top honors in District 3, which had four teams qualify for the Class 1A tournament.

Wallin, a first baseman, led the team in batting average (.547), home runs (six), hits (41), slugging average (.973), RBI (45) and tied for the team lead in doubles (eight) and triples (three).

Stoner, the ace of Logan's pitching staff, finished with a 1.74 ERA, a 9-0 record with 88 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. As a shortstop, he hit .479 with a team-tying eight doubles and a team-high 37 runs scored.

As a pitcher, Burns finished with a 4-1 record, a 3.47 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings. As a hitter, he hit .390 with 33 runs scored.

Kotara, a centerfielder, hit .397 with four home runs and 30 runs scored. Primarily a leadoff batter, he led the steam with 21 walks.

Kneitz, an outfielder, hit .341 with 17 RBI and tied for the team lead in triples with three.

Sanchez, a third baseman, hit .446 with 25 runs scored and a team-leading 24 stolen bases.

Class 1A champion Melrose had five players make the all-district team. Grady, which advanced to the semifinals, had four all-district picks. Cimarron counted three players for all-district honors.

Logan finished the season 17-5 overall and won the district title for a fourth straight year with a 7-2 mark. The Longhorns lost to Melrose in the Class 1A final.

Tucumcari baseball coach George Montano announced during Tucumcari High School's annual athletic banquet that his team had two all-district picks - Nick Goen and Luis Archuleta.

Goen, a sophomore, led the Rattlers in batting average (.404), on-base percentage (.556), home runs (two), stolen bases (10), runs scored (16), hits (19), doubles (three), triples (three), RBI (16) and slugging average (.723). As a pitcher, her struck out 24 in 27 1/3 innings.

Archuleta, a sophomore second baseman, led the team with a .947 fielding percentage by a wide margin. As a hitter, he hit .325 and was third on the team in RBI with nine.

Honorable mentions for Tucumcari were junior Jace Aughtman, sophomore Pat Garcia and junior Josh Griego.

Tucumcari finished the season 3-17 overall and was winless in district play.
