  • Candidate Q&As: Logan school board position 5

    Jan 29, 2013

Position 5 (four-year term) Thomas S. Humble (incumbent) - What's one thing the district can do to save taxpayers money without compromising student education? I'll be honest, Logan is doing a wonderful job at managing their budget. The school has not been operating out of emergency funds for at least two years. Instead they have been operating in the black thanks to great management by the administration. You want to be careful in areas that you cut so the students don't suffer. The board will never sacrifice education to save a dollar. Some...

  • Candidate Q&As: Logan school board position 4

    Jan 29, 2013

The following candidates are seeking election Tuesday to the Logan School Board. Each was asked to respond to the same five questions. Position 4 (four-year term) Bill Cone (incumbent) - What is one thing the district can do to save taxpayers money without compromising student education? We have been very careful with how money is spent in the district as far as bonds go. There is a need to be more informed and careful on technology purchases. A good example is the purchase of the smart boards, which have had a positive impact on the students...

Tucumcari School District residents will vote on continuing a 20-year-old tax to fund school operations in a special election on Feb. 5. The tax is expected to raise about $165,000 this year, and similar amounts through 2018. Proceeds go to a capital improvement fund that is specified in...

    QCS staff|Jan 29, 2013

Mesalands Community College is currently preparing for their 15th Annual Iron Pour on March 10-16 at the foundry. • Thomas: May be tough to choose who to cheer for

    Jan 29, 2013

Super Bowl Sunday. I can't help but smile when I say those three wonderful words. Sure it would be even better if the Green Bay Packers were one of the two teams playing in the Super Bowl, but alas like many great teams they didn't make the cut. I'm a fan of football and the prestige that comes from the honor of being able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season. Every year the Super Bowl has some sort of element of excitement and uniqueness that makes it a spectacle not only fans enjoy, but millions of viewers around the world...

  • Comments from the canyons: Social standards getting lower

    Jan 29, 2013

We have been visiting about the joys of life in rural areas and have noted that many of them are unique. Once in a while, those good events are slightly diluted because times have changed and with those changes a few of our standards have been lowered. We also note that these changes are not limited to rural areas as they can be witnessed wherever we go. When we were children, we were taught to behave at home and in public and were called down it we ignored our manners. Although we didn't eat in restaurants very often, we knew we had better be...

  • Notes from the church lady: Faith in God can bring about great change

    Jan 29, 2013

"I can do all things through Christ..." Philippians 4:13 Have you changed in the past 20 years? No, I don't mean physically, but in your spirit. I can see how the Lord took an unsure, untrained woman and turned her into a woman who relies on her savior for strength. This change didn't take place due to my efforts, but only when I yielded to the Lord's will and took a giant step of faith. What was this tremendous transformation? It started 20 years ago when I was sitting in church and heard an audible, yes audible voice speaking to me. I turned...
