    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|May 14, 2013

The Arch Hurley Conservancy District board reduced member assessments Tuesday by a dollar. However, due to the low level of Conchas Lake and silt build up in the district's intake channel, the district still cannot allocate water, said Chairman Larry Perkins. After speaking with the federal Bureau of Reclamation, work to remove the nine feet of silt blocking the intake channel should begin on May 20, said district Manager Franklin McCasland. • Thomas: Office lizard creates moral dilemma

    May 14, 2013

As the weather continues to warm up more and more some of my scaly friends have begun to show up around the office. Just today a lizard that darted away from the desk I was walking towards surprised me. I looked over at the lizard that had stopped once it realized I was not going to give chase. His eyes were fixed on me occasionally glancing around for additional movement. I proceeded to edit some photos and as I looked down at my foot I saw the lizard had since moved from the open floor and taken refuge atop my shoe, which was propped on the d...

After his fleeting moment of goodness he backslid and I considered rescinding the reward, but I decided against doing that....

  • Comments from the canyons: Even a little rain brings hope to area

    May 14, 2013

Last Tuesday, many people were driving around to see the results of the rainfall. They had all begun to smile on Monday when the first sprinkles landed and had watched eagerly all day as more moisture fell. Once again, hopes were rewarded for a little while. Even a tiny bit of moisture is welcome in our area and all drops are much appreciated. When the major part of the storm hit in the late afternoon, we were able to see water running down the streets and creating its own little rivulets in a few of the pastures. As usual, the amount was varie...

  • Justice Department's intrusion demands explanation

    May 14, 2013

The U.S. Justice Department appears to have crossed a bright line that shields one of the cherished tenets of the nation's Constitution that the agency's top officers take an oath to protect and defend. This dangerous intrusion cannot be allowed to stand. It's been revealed that the Justice Department secretly obtained two months worth of telephone records — in April and May 2012 — of reporters and editors working for The Associated Press. The top AP news executive correctly called it a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into a major new...
