    Quay County Sun staff|Dec 7, 2016

Tucumcari's annual Parade of Lights made its way down a new route Saturday night as it traveled from the Kmart parking lot down Historic Route 66 Boulevard to the Tucumcari Convention Center. The convention center then hosted hundreds of participants and viewers for post-parade cookies and hot chocolate provided by Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital, a little shopping at booths of the Christmas Expo and visits with Santa Claus. As usual, Santa rode in the basket of a ladder truck provided by the...

  • Gun safety classes offered online

    Quay County Sun staff|Dec 7, 2016

STAFF REPORT New Mexico's game hunting rules and regulations are complex and hunters have to get lucky to score a game license, but basic gun safety rules are relatively simple, according to New Mexico Game and Fish officials. There are four basic rules to firearms safety, said Karl Moffatt, spokesperson for the New Mexico Game and Fish Department, based on the initials TABK. They are as follows: n Treat all firearms as if they are loaded. Assume all firearms are loaded. This, Moffatt said, is...

  • Hounds continue to build program

    David Norton|Dec 7, 2016

PORTALES —Despite a 45-12 drumming at the hands of Fort Hays State in Saturday’s C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl of the 2016 season, the Eastern New Mexico University football team is continuing its steady march toward to the ultimate goal of NCAA Division II postseason playoffs. “I think the standard needs to go up a little bit,” fourth-year ENMU coach Josh Lynn said on Monday. “You talk about narrowing the gap to get to the playoffs, and we have to narrow that gap. We have to work harder and get a few more players to get to where we want t...

The commission approved budgeting for two tanker trucks at about $240,000 each and two brush trucks for the Quay, Porter, Fire I and Jordan fire districts, using loans through the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration, said County Manager Richard Primrose. • The commission also approved arrangements to make up for state budget shortfalls for the county’s anti-driving while intoxicated progr...

  • After 50 years, still no arena like the Pit

    Albuquerque Journal|Dec 7, 2016

When it comes to hoops in New Mexico, there is but one destination — the Pit. The nationally renowned arena, originally named University Arena but affectionately called the Pit for its underground design, is the University of New Mexico Lobos hunting ground, where visiting teams fear to tread thanks to an amazing fan base that makes it one of the loudest, most raucous places to play college basketball. High school teams also strive to play in the Pit for state basketball championship games. Over the years, the Pit has played host to NCAA t...

  • Politicians are servants, not saints

    Steve Hansen|Dec 7, 2016

I find it a little odd that a nation that flocks to stories about heroes who break the rules becomes shocked and outraged when inconsequential misdeeds by candidates for public office and high-ranking officials are made public. I’m going to relate this to a public debate raging about former Gen. David Petraeus and Hillary Clinton. Petraeus is a candidate for secretary of state and Clinton, of course, has already served in that capacity. We admire people who do great things, especially if they break rules that get in their way and defy a...

  • Maybe popular vote should win

    Rube Render|Dec 7, 2016

Much is being made of the fact that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote while Donald Trump “only” won the electoral vote. What major media refers to as demonstrators or protesters are in fact rioters who remain angry that they are unable to change the results of the election. Many are carrying signs with Trump’s likeness proclaiming, “Not My President.” One budding comedian on the internet posted a likeness of Hillary Clinton with the notation, “Not Anybody’s President.” News flash, whoever...

  • Letter to the editor - Dec. 7

    Dec 7, 2016

Rube Render’s Nov. 23 column was primarily focused on poking fun at education, a subject as ubiquitous as tax cuts by Republicans. He wrote, “Universities have established nonviolent spaces and crying rooms with coloring books and Play-Doh to assist students in coping with the panic attacks caused by the catastrophic election.” That comes from the old joke — the Republican library burned and destroyed both books, one that had not been colored in. There are a lot of intelligent people who are worried about what Trump will do. Chief strateg...

  • Bible is security against Satan

    Leonard Lauriault|Dec 7, 2016

While Dec. 7, 1941, was called “a date which would live in infamy,” the attack on Pearl Harbor isn’t as widely remembered as it once was, possibly because of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and possibly because the generation who experienced the attack first-hand is mostly gone. Another event took place on Dec. 7, 1868, when Jesse James robbed a bank in Gallatin, Missouri, and killed a man. How many of us knew about that or even who Jesse James was? The problem with forgetting history is that studying it prepares us for internal and exter...
