Tucumcari auto dealer closing

Interstate Automotive plans to close its dealership in Tucumcari, employees said this morning.

The service department finished the projects it was working on and left on Monday, said Joey Haas, a sales associate.

Haas said the notice of closure from corporate representatives came last week, though there has been no official closing date set.

Interstate Automotive, formerly Brian Urlacher Cross Country Auto Sales, employed 13 people — six in the service department, five sales associates and two business office associates.

Interstate Automotive is the last franchise dealership in Tucumcari after Hamilton Big Country Ford closed its doors in February 2010.

Brian Urlacher Cross Country Auto Sales purchased Mills-Strebeck Autoplex in 2006.

On Thursday, office manager Gayle Thomas and Haas were the only two operating the dealership. Thomas answered phone calls, most of which were inquiries about the closure of the business.

"They are closing the doors, no one is taking over the operations of this business, it is leaving Tucumcari," Thomas said to one caller.
