County Commission authorizes grant applications for sheriff, DWI

Staff Report

The Quay County Commission authorized the county sheriff’s department and the county’s anti-driving-while-intoxicated coordinator to seek state funded grants at a special meeting on Friday.

Friday’s meeting replaced the regular meeting scheduled for Feb. 23, which was postponed due to bad weather.

The commission authorized DWI Coordinator Bryan Rinestine to seek $17,264 in grant funding from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety’s DWI Prevention bureau. The grant supplements $76,000 in state funds that are distributed through a formula, County Manager Richard Primrose said. The grant covers particular programs, mostly for DWI prevention programs.

Russell Shafer, the county sheriff, received permission from the commission to apply for a $24,200 grant from the state’s Law Enforcement Protection Fund.

Shafer said the grant would be used to purchase radar equipment, ammunition and safety vests for sheriff’s deputies.

The commission also discussed:

• Public hearings scheduled for March 9 on the county’s 40-year water plan, which must be filed with the Office of the State Engineer. Hearings will be held in Tucumcari and Logan, Primrose said.

• A meeting of the state New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Transportation Planning Committee on March 19. County officials will emphasize the importance of the U.S. 54 bridge over the Canadian River at Logan, which is scheduled to be replaced by 2017.
